Steampunk Clothing

Novels and literature are as essential in this genre as are fashion and music. Steam punk is often used to describe a complete culture as well as a lifestyle. Though it would be wrong to use the term neo-Victorianism, this label is often bandied about to encompass the wide range of aesthetic principles that make up the steam punk genre.

At the heart of the philosophy lies a fascination with fantastic fictional machines the like of which were described by authors such as Jules Verne and HG wells. Thought the views held by steam punk followers are often anti-establishment, it does not embody the same anarchist tendencies that were common in the original punk scene, or the nihilism that existed in the goth movement. In fact the philosophy encourages positive thought and optimistic views of the world.

The steam punk music that is an intrinsic aspect of the genre is even harder to categorize. It includes such artists as Unextraordinary Gentlemen, Abney Park, Jill Tracy, Attrition, and Johnny Hollow.
